Does Insurance Cover Genetic Testing If You Have A Genetic Disorder?

I have a genetic disorder (diagnosed by labs and diagnostic tests, not genetic testing) and I want to have a baby before I'm forced to have a hysterectomy. I need to know if I carry a dominant or recessive gene for it, and I need to know if my partner carries the gene as well. Will my insurance pay for the genetic testing? How much does it cost? Will we have to get married for my insurance to pay for him?

Answer: It depends on your insurance, but many don't cover genetic testing outside of pregnancy if it's not needed to make a diagnosis. Some are more likely to cover testing for women who are currently pregnant, but even then you may have trouble getting testing covered for your partner. Check with your doctor's office or with a genetic counselor to see if they can give you the billing codes and diagnosis code for the testing so you can call your insurance company to find out about coverage. You should also ask your doctor's office or genetic counselor about the cost for the testing. It really depends on what test you are having and where it would be done, but genetic testing in general can vary

Has Anyone Used 23andme Genetic Ancestry Testing For Medical Info Also, And Had Any Problem With Insurance?

I put this question in the genealogy forum since some of you might have used 23andme for Ancestry testing. I'm trying to decide if the Health&Medical info of the 23andme genetic test is also worth having, or if it is knowledge that might cause more trouble than help, especially with effect on insurance or long term care. Any experiences out there from ancestry enthusiasts who have also used this 23andme for the Medical info?

Answer: The genetic testing your are talking about is not used for medical evaluation. You need to talk to your doctor about genetic testing for medical purposes. The methods of evaluating the results are different.

Are Women Using Genetic Testing To Predict Breast Cancer ...

A new national study will look at whether women are using genetic testing to see if they have inherited a greater risk of getting breast and ovarian cancer. "To date, there has been no national study of BRCA testing in the community settings where most people receive their care," said Rebecca Sutphen, a medical doctor and professor of genetics at the University of South Florida. The two-year study will address whether tests are offered to women, and if there are disparities between women of various socioeconomic, racial and ethnic groups....
