I have State Farm insurance in Texas, how much do you think my rates will go up if I hit somebody, and I'm a minor who's driven for a year?

Car insurance in Houston is so expensive!! I was wondering what is the minimum coverage that I need to pay? I can't afford to pay almost half of my monthly payment on car insurance!! That's crazy!

Do you know what is the minimum required by law? It would be a 60 months leased car.

Answer: Hi Linda,

In Texas the minimum requirements for liability are 25/50/25. This insurance will cost you about $25 a month.

When I'm Added Into My Parents Car Insurance, When Do I Have To Pay?

I'm 16 years old, and I have my learners permit. I have a car, and I want to get my license soon. My dad said it's roughly $500 for every 6 months. (We have a lot of cars)

We also use Geico insurance.

My question is, when I'm added onto the insurance, do I have to pay the $500 immediately? Or do I wait until 6 months?

Answer: This is not something anyone online can help with, as the payment plan your parents have selected for their insurance policy is solely their discretion. Like many insurers, Geico offers more than one payment plan. I do not know their specific offerings, but such options generally include plans like pay in full or pay on a monthly basis.

You'll need to ask your parents how they pay or how they'll want you to pay for your portion. Perhaps they'll ask for a monthly amount, in which case you'll just need to budget that $500 over a six-month period.

I'm Traveling For A Month, Do I Need Car Insurance?

I'm going to be traveling for a month, during which nobody will use my car. My insurance expires right before the month starts, and I want to switch providers after that, but is there any good reason to continue paying insurance for that month at full rate when nobody's even going to touch the car?
Or, is there another way I can save money?

Answer: You can, depending on the state, you can reduce coverage to comprehensive only, which would give you fire, theft, vandalism, glass, etc coverage.
If your state requires your car to be insured as long as it is registered, you cannot take liability off of it unless you turn in your plates. When you come back, you have to reregister it to get new plates & pay the registration fees again.
Also, some insurers require continuous coverage to get a better rate. If you cancel your policy for 30 days, you may end up paying a higher rate with the new insurer & also, if you stay with the same company, they may charge a higher rate.
