Carry Our Appraisals For Insurance Companies ?

Does anyone know if insurance companies use specialists to determine the value of the goods they insure or their clients claim for?

I am a Persian Rug specialist and have carried out a number of appraisals for customers in the past who have been asked by their insurer to get an estimate of retail value of a damaged rug when making a claim. I was wondering if it was possible to work with insurance companies on a more formal basis?

Answer: Ryan,

You know already, there are two situations where valuation of property comes into play. One is before a loss and the other is after a loss.

Before a loss it is up to the insured to get an accurate appraisal of the property they want to insure. The appraisal is at the insured's expense.

After a loss occurs the insurance company may or may not choose to secure an appraisal to determine the value of the loss. More often, than not, the company will accept the owners appraisal if it is reasonable, current and from a reputable appraiser. So the insurance company is not likely to enter into a "more formal" arrangement with you. They would,

How To Get Contract Work From Insurance Appraisal Companies?

Inspection of cars off lease ,estimate writing etc

Answer: Let the independent adjusting companies in your area know that you are available. First, get your appraiser license. Then contact the independents. The insurance carriers won't hire you (they already have that covered in house) but, many independent adjusters will, as a subcontractor to them

Flood Insurance Affect Appraisals?

I live in WV. My husband and I purchased a house in January 08. This is my concern. The mortgage company we went through told us that the appraisal was wrong because they had put us in a flood zone (which would be impossible unless the river rose 150 feet up a cliff after traveling through another individual's yard 300+ feet). We don't have to pay flood insurance, but did that affect the price of the house in the long run? I mean, would the appraiser put a smaller value on our house just because they thought it was in a flood zone and it wasn't? And, because it isn't in a flood zone, would we have had to still pay the flood certification fee and life of loan certification fee at closing?

Answer: Flood data, along with census tract data, 9 digit zip codes, and MSAs are downloaded through one or another service directly into an appraisal report form through most appraisal software, after the appraiser verifies the property location on an online map. A flood zone finding should result in a double check unless the appraiser has extensive knowledge of the area or prior warning from the client.

Adjustments for flood zone properties may not be apparent. When possible, the appraiser will select comparables similarly affected, obviating the need to establish an adjustment value, as the market will already have done so.

how do i find out the current value? the cert # is 013474j and the value was high for 1986. i cannot seem to find how to get a hold of artistic interiors, or find the correct link to richard shelton. it is an oil painting 20 x 24 with frame.

Answer: Are you shure it is an insurance appraisal and not certified original. If it is insurance appraisal it should be from insurance company not from some gallery or interior designer, or even better from a place that manufactures paintings. You can contact Christie's for an evaluation or ask on askart website. Also you can post the artist signature and picture of the painting on here and than you will get more answers usually.
