Does Health Insurance Cover Speech Therapy When It Is Advised By A Doctor?
Question by Deans | Posted in Parenting
My son is 2...and I really want to get him into speech therapy. His doctor barely brought it up at his 2 year check up...but I'm sure would be willing to delve further if I wanted to. Does it cost much? Does insurance cover it?
Thanks Zorro. I am in VA, not WV...but, your wife is such a busy woman. I appreciate it...but I will call the pediatrician on it.
Answer: Insurance only covers speech therapy for children if there is a repaired birth defect or acquired problem (i.e., vocal nodules or traumatic brain injury).
Every state in the US (it's federal law) has an early intervention program, which is free of charge. Speech and language delay has a potential impact on education, so intervention is provided through the schools.
You can ask your child's pediatrician to refer you, or you can request (in writing) a speech/language evaluation at your neighborhood elementary school.
How Do I Get A 3 Year Old Girl Speech And Language Services When Insurance Doesn't Cover Treatment?
Question by King | Posted in Special Education
I have a friend who has a 3 year old daughter that has been diagnosed with a speech and language disability (she inst talking yet). His insurance won't cover treatment. Is there any other avenue that I can take to find her services? Will the local school district assist her at her young age?
Answer: In the United States, public schools are mandated to provide Special Education services, including Speech and Language to children aged 3 through 21. You should contact your local school and ask for an evaluation through the Childfind program. It is a good idea to make your request in writing.
The evaluation and any appropriate services are required to be provided to you free of charge.
Insurance Coverage For Speech Therapy, Which Service Providers They Will Do?
Question by tmy0915 | Posted in Other - Health
I want the name of the service providers. Usually how much for the monthly payment of the insurance which covers this? Also any other way that I can claim for? Can I get rebate from medicare? If I claim this in overseas for my young daughter(We're Australian citizen), is that OK?
Answer: Look up ASHA.org, which is the site for the American Speech Language Hearing Association; it's a great resource.
You won't be able to use Medicare or Medicaid, and most insurers only cover therapy for congenital or acquired disorders which have been addressed medically, like cleft palate, a tracheostomy, a swallowing disorder, or vocal nodules. Developmental problems (usually articulation disorders or language delay and disorders related to them) are seldom covered, as the insurance companies know the schools and early intervention programs address these problems.
Your best bets-- an early intervention program, or a school-based program. All you need to do to get the ball rolling
Can Speech Pathologists Who Have Private Practices Reject People Who Dont Have Private Insurance?
Question by Luvly | Posted in Other - Health
I was laid off of my job and my inusurance has ended. In the meanwhile, I need to see a Speech and Language Pathologist. I called a private practice near my home, and she asked me if I had private insurance and I said, "no, I will pay with cash." She then referred me to the local hospital and hung up the phone. Is this ethical of the profession? If not I am going to report her.
Answer: It was neither kind nor professional, but as a private practitioner, she can accept or refuse whomever she wants. KJL
