Would I Have A Valid Complaint Against My Home Insurance Provider? |
I had a call from my lettings agent stating I had a burst pipe in my rental property. I have a home emergency insurance which pays £150 towards call out and repair of the problem. I called the 24 hour claims line and after almost 1 hour the call had not been answered. Fearing damage caused by the delay I instructed a local repair man to visit the property. After doing this via my mobile I finally got through to the helpline and was informed as I did not wait for one of their approved repairers I would not be covered for any of the cost. I appreciate in normal circumstances I should wait but if you have a burst pipe and no one answering the phone I was forced into this action. Do you think
| Answer: I think you have a very strong case. By definition calls to an "emergency" line are urgent, so to leave them unanswered for an hour is unforgiveable. It makes no difference that the insurer has probably been very busy recently. If they offer a service they have to make it available. Having tried for an hour it would be perfectly reasonable for you to then make your own arrangements. As they are only offering the first £150 of the cost, your choice of tradesman will not affect the cost to the insurer, so their insistence on an approved list is not reasonable. Especially as the longer you waited the more you were likely to have to pay in total. Contact your |
